hydroplaning which is also known as a loss of
steering or braking control when a layer of water prevents direct contact
between tires and the road, runway, or other surface.
If
you do find yourself hydroplaning, do not panic. Follow these tips for
regaining control of your vehicle:
• Stop
accelerating:
Gently remove your foot from the accelerator. If you have anti-lock brakes,
break normally. If you do not, gently pump brakes. Any sudden steering or
braking can reduce your ability to regain control.
• Turn
into the skid:
Turn your steering wheel in the direction you want the front of the car to go.
This will cause the rear of your car to line up with the front, and hopefully
come out of the skid.
While
these tips are helpful for emergency scenarios when you may find yourself
skidding, there are preventative measures you can take to reduce your chances
of hydroplaning.
Prevention
In
order to lessen your risk of hydroplaning or skidding, perform the following
recommended maintenance on your vehicle:
• Change
wiper blades regularly:
Broken wiper blades can severely impede your ability to see out your
windshield. In heavy rains, properly functioning wiper blades are imperative.
Not only are they helpful, but they are cheap. Have them inspected and replaced
regularly.
• Check
tires regularly:
Properly inflated tires will greatly reduce your risk of hydroplaning. All
tires have their psi (Pounds per Square Inch) printed on the tire. Check
pressure regularly. If low, go to a gas station and add air. Low tire pressure
reduces traction, and may cause hydroplaning.
